Nature-based solutions (NbS) for climate resilience in the city of Lorca – Lorca city council, SingularGreen, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, INDRESMAT.
NatUR-W is an EU-funded project under urban innovation actions that addresses urban challenges from energy poverty and climate change, particularly extreme heat events and water scarcity. Through this project, the city of Lorca in Murcia is developing and implementing ‘NatUR-W Plans’ to meet these challenges. The proposed solution respects the natural water cycle, using innovative, inclusive, sustainable and self-sufficient Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to improve the energy efficiency of social housing and public buildings, create more green space, and regenerate the historic city centre.
NbS implementation for this project focuses on two key aspects. First, several public buildings will have a green wall that uses a new insulation system based on recycled and sustainable materials. Second, a part of the surrounding area will be renatured and converted into a new public green space, an urban forest.
NBSCLIMATE team role in the project focuses on facilitating stakeholder engagement activities and governance. During the first in-person meeting in Lorca on June 26th and 27th, NBSCLIMATE team Jesus Iglesias, Abdel-Rahman El-Mahdi and Sara Pelaez organized a stakeholder workshop with participants from Lorca. This workshop will be instrumental in building a stakeholders board to support NATUR-W project activities. The session also featured a stakeholder mapping and analysis exercise, an essential step in developing the participatory governance plan for the project. On behalf of NBSCLIMATE, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all our project partners: Ayuntamiento de Lorca, SingularGreen, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and INDRESMAT. We are incredibly grateful to the stakeholders from the city of Lorca who actively participated in the session. Your invaluable contributions are driving the success of the NatUR-W project.
